The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has warned Iran it “better be careful” concerning their nuclear enrichment plan. This warning comes after Tehran announced it was going to start enriching Uranium beyond the limit that has been set by the international nuclear record. This comes in the wake of sanctions that were imposed by the US on Iran in May after a reduction of compliance with the agreed landmark pact. Despite there being efforts to stop Iran’s nuclear plan, there seems to be no going back for Tehran as it is set to continue with its project.
What Iran Said
On Sunday, Iran claimed they were only hours away from surpassing the 3.67% uranium enrichment cap that had been initially set in the deal. In addition, Tehran also threatened to keep reducing its commitments after every 60 days, unless the remaining signatories to the accord i.e. France, China, Russia, The United Kingdom and Germany protected it from sanctions that have been imposed by the US. This takes place when Iran has already surpassed the Uranium stockpile limit that was set in the accord on July 1.

When asked about what he felt concerning the recent developments in Iran, President Trump said “Iran better be careful because you enrich for one reason and I won’t tell you what that reason is, but it’s not good.” President Trump did not give a clear elaboration on the actions that Washington was going to take. However, he did tell reporters that Iran “will never have a nuclear weapon.
Iran has already distanced itself from the possibility of seeking nuclear weapons and has even gone to the extent of referring to a religious decree that was issued in the 2000s by Supreme Leader Ali Hussein Khamenei. The religious decree forbids “the production of stockpiling and use of weapons of mass destruction, and specifically nuclear arms.”
Despite distancing itself from any nuclear weapons, the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, still threated additional sanction on Iran. “Iran’s latest expansion of its nuclear programme will lead to further isolations and sanctions.” He said in a Twitter post He also added that “Nations should restore the long-standing standard of no enrichment for Iran’s nuclear programme, Iran’s regime, armed with nuclear weapons, and would pose an even greater danger to the world.
What Next?
It is yet to be known what action will be taken by Washington concerning the latest series of events from Tehran However, it is expected that the US government may end up imposing more sanctions on Tehran. What we do not know is the type of sanctions that will be imposed on Tehran. As for now, we only have to wait and see whether Tehran will continue with their nuclear enrichment plan.
